Download products from Shopify

Overview

Find out how to download products, and new product variants, from Shopify.

Products are the goods your business buys or manufactures and sells.

And over time, as your market changes and business grows, you’ll add new products to your inventory. If you prefer to create new products in Shopify, you can then download them to Cin7 Omni.

When you download products, Cin7 Omni breaks your Shopify product catalog into three groups:

  • Mapped products

  • Unmapped, mappable products

  • Unmapped, unmappable products

A mapped product already exists in Shopify and Cin7 Omni. A mapping has already been created, too, between its Shopify and Cin7 Omni versions. When you download products from Shopify, these products are ignored.

An unmapped, mappable product already exists in Shopify and Cin7 Omni. But a mapping has not been created between its Shopify and Cin7 Omni versions. When you download products from Shopify, mappings are created for these products. Find out more about mapping Shopify and Cin7 Omni products.

And finally, an unmapped, unmappable product only exists in Shopify – these are your new products. When you download products from Shopify, a matching Cin7 Omni product, and a mapping between it and its Shopify version, is created for each. Then those products’ sales, stock levels, and other details will keep in sync between Shopify and Cin7 Omni.

If you create new products in Cin7 Omni, upload the products to Shopify  instead.

Download products

Before downloading products from Shopify,

  • create your new products in Shopify,

  • confirm each Shopify product has an SKU (or that each of its variants has an SKU),

  • review how Shopify products with and without variants are downloaded to Cin7 Omni (see below),

  • if you want your Shopify products’ images to be downloaded, enable Download Product Images in your Shopify integration settings, and

  • keep in mind that what Shopify calls “variants” Cin7 Omni calls “options,” and that while Shopify products may have no variants, Cin7 Omni products always have at least one option.

Now download products from Shopify:

  1. Log in to Cin7 Omni.

  2. From the Integrations menu in the navigation, open your Shopify integration.

  3. Select Download Products on the Product Status tile.

  4. Open the Download Products tab.

  5. Select either

    • Import Products Created Since Last Import to download Shopify products created since you last downloaded products only, or

    • Import All Products to download all Shopify products.

  6. You’ll be given the total number of Shopify products that are either

    • unmapped and mappable, for which Cin7 Omni will create mappings, or

    • unmapped and unmappable, for which Cin7 Omni will create matching products and mappings.

  7. Select Next. You’ll be given a second summary on the Products Not Matched tab:

    • New Products is the number of unmapped, unmappable Shopify products, for which Cin7 Omni will create matching products and mappings.

    • New Product Options is the number of variants across the unmapped, unmappable Shopify products, for which Cin7 Omni will create matching product options and mappings.

    • Existing Price Options Linked is the number of unmapped, mappable Shopify products, for which Cin7 Omni created mappings (find out more about mapping products).

  8. Review the summary and sample. Then select Next. You’ll be taken to the Custom Mappings tab. Because you don’t want to create custom mappings, select Next (find out more about creating custom mappings). You’ll be taken to the Products to Import tab.

  9. Optionally, if you want to download only a subset of Shopify products, select Download Products to Import. A spreadsheet will download. Remove from the spreadsheet the rows of products you don’t want to download. Then, in Cin7 Omni, select Choose File and upload the edited spreadsheet.

  10. Select Next. If the products you’re downloading have new Vendors or Product Types, you’ll be asked to map those Shopify Vendors and Product Types to new or existing Cin7 Omni Brands and Product Types. Then select Next.

  11. When you see You’re ready to import!, decide whether to select Import Product Images to download your Shopify products’ images. Then either

    • select Test to preview the products that will download, or

    • select Import New Products to download and map the products from Shopify.

  12. Finally, to download your Shopify products, select Finish.

How each product is downloaded to Cin7 Omni depends on whether it has variants. Here’s how Shopify products with and without variants are downloaded to Cin7 Omni by default—these mappings may be overridden if you've set up Field Mappings in your Shopify integration settings:

Products without variants

Cin7 Omni products always have at least one option (the default option).

When you download a Shopify product without variants, Cin7 Omni creates one product with only the default option. That Shopify product’s details are downloaded to the Cin7 Omni product as follows:

Products with variants

When you download a Shopify product with variants, Cin7 Omni creates a new product with an option for each variant.

In order to create the Cin7 Omni product options, the Names of the Shopify product’s options become the Option Labels of the Cin7 Omni product options, and the Values of the Shopify product’s options become the values of the corresponding Option Label of the Cin7 Omni product.

That Shopify product and its variant’s details are downloaded to the Cin7 Omni product and its options as follows:

Download new variants (options)

If you create new variants of a Shopify product mapped to Cin7 Omni product, you must delete the product's mappings, download the new variants, and create new mappings:

  1. Log in to Cin7 Omni.

  2. From the Integrations menu in the navigation, select your Shopify integration.

  3. On the Product Status tile of your Shopify integration’s dashboard, select View Mapped Products. You’ll see a list of every product option (variant) mapped between Omni and Shopify.

  4. Delete the product’s current mappings – don’t select Delete All.

  5. Now (re)download the product (see above): when you download the product, the old mappings will be recreated at step seven, and the new variants will be downloaded and mapped at step twelve.
