Import bill of materials (BOM)

Import bill of materials (BOM)

Overview

Bill of Materials (BOMs) can be imported via a spreadsheet - useful if you have hundreds of products with associated BOMs. For more information on BOMs, see Creating a Bill of Materials (BOM).

There are some prerequisites for importing BOMs:

  1. All finished products must exist in the system.

  2. All component products must exist in the system.

  3. There must be no pre-existing BOMs for your finished products.

Importing BOMs will create a new Bill of Materials for each product in your spreadsheet.

Template

Download the Bill of Materials template (20KB).

The template requires the following fields to be filled out:

Field

Explanation

Item Code

This is the code or SKU of the finished product or component.

Item Name

This is the Product Name of the finished product or component.

Item Qty

For Finished products, this will always be 1. For component products, this will be the quantity that makes up one of the finished products.

Row Format

For every finished product enter Parent. Component products can be left blank, or enter one of the following to format the row: Indent, Bold, Hide.

The order of your spreadsheet is particularly important. Each component will be assigned to the parent product directly above it. Component products in the Bill of Materials will appear in exactly the same order as the spreadsheet.

For Disassembly, otherwise known as Use/Make BOMs, an extra column is needed that determines the type of BOM. In this column, you will specify that the header products are Use and the component products are Make.

See the Use/Make Bill of Materials template (20KB).

Import BOMs

  1. Select Products in the navigation.

  2. Select Actions and then Import and Update BOMs.

  3. Choose either Import from file upload, or Copy and paste file from clipboard.

  4. Upload or paste the data, then click Import BOMs.

  5. Your BOMs will import (or you will see an error with suggestions on how you can improve your data). Typical errors include the product codes not existing, or BOMs already existing for a finished product.

  6. Select Finished! Back to Products.

Importing the Bill of Materials cannot currently be undone. Try importing one product first to test your spreadsheet. If you have incorrectly imported your BOMs, you can edit your BOM or contact our support team to delete multiple BOMs for you.
