Virtual stock with bill of materials (BOM)

Virtual stock with bill of materials (BOM)

Overview

Virtual stock is the amount of a finished product you could potentially make, given the stock of its components.

For each component, Cin7 Omni calculates the Stock Available (in the same branch) divided by the Qty in the bill of materials. The lowest result of these calculations equals the virtual stock.

For example, let's say that you have a chair that is made from four legs, one seat, and one cushion. If there are 20 seats, 20 cushions, and 8 legs, all in the same branch, then we can calculate the virtual stock as follows:

  • Legs: 8 / 4 = 2

  • Cushions: 20 / 1 = 20

  • Seats: 20 / 1 = 20

The smallest result is 2 and therefore that is the virtual stock number in this example, and the number of chairs you could produce using the current stock of its parts.

Use virtual stock

Virtual Stock will display once the following conditions have been met:

  • The finished product must have a BOM associated with it.

  • The finished product must be set to Kit or Made to Order in the product details page.

There are two places you can view Virtual Stock.

OTS view

  1. From the left navigation, select Products.

  2. Select the SOH column for the product.

The Virtual Stock will be shown in the pop-up window.

The OTS view can have a different amount of virtual stock than the Product list view or your integrations. The OTS view does not need the components to be in the same branch location when it is calculating the virtual stock. All other virtual stock calculations require all components to be in the same branch location.

Add virtual stock column to Product list view

  1. Whilst logged in as an administrator, select your username, then select Settings.

  2. From the Products menu, select Product Settings.

  3. From the 'Show Additional Columns In The List' menu, check Virtual Stock and Save.

Virtual stock will now appear in the products list.  You will see different virtual stock amounts for your different branches (depending on your branch filter).

Virtual stock can be pushed to your ecommerce and marketplace integrations, as well as certain EDI retailers.

This powerful feature will allow you to send the number of kits you have - and this number will change depending on the number of components in stock.

Cin7 Omni will send through to your integration the total number of virtual items you could make, plus any finished components you physically have in stock.
