Do you mean an account number for a customer? This can be activated in the CRM settings and then this will be used as the reference number on a new sales order instead of the default format of the first letter from the first name, and the first three letters of the second name, along with the internal ID number in the backend.
In the CRM if you want to see the Customer ID that is used in the backend you can view in the URL, it's next to this part of the text “N&idMember=1033”
