Backorder split payment issue Answered

Nic Muhl

When a customer places an order and pays for the order in full, but some of the items go on backorder, the original order/invoice shows an overpayment and the backorder invoice shows no payment. This creates a discrepancy is accounting and the payments need to manually split.

    Hi Nic,

We truly understand how important this is for you, and we apologize for any frustration this may be causing. Currently, when a back-order is created from a fully paid original order, the payment does not automatically split, which can result in the original order appearing overpaid if it’s not adjusted manually. We have already raised this issue as a feature request, which is now part of our product backlog.

As a product team, we regularly assess feature requests to improve our offerings. However, because our roadmap is shaped by strategic priorities, customer impact, and resource estimates, we cannot provide a specific timeline for when this feature will be reviewed or implemented.

In the meantime, we suggest manually splitting the payment for the back order after it’s created. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding as we work on potential improvements. Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.

Seconding that this is an issue and a big one for shopify customers and possibly others. Shopify order payments get deposited as a batch payment (one single deposit to our account for the total value of a qty of orders), therefore it is not as simple as manually splitting the payment as you have suggested, because it is not 1 payment that relates only to 1 order.

Hi, could you please share an update on this? We have gone live recently and noticed the same issue and we are in the pre-order period with Shopify.
